Uncover the Net (UTN) is a web directory that provides professionally managed content on a comprehensive list of topics. All content on Uncover the Net is manually reviewed, virtually eliminating the usual spam found in machine-organized search engines.

When UTN owner Shawn Walters first contacted RaffSoftware, the directory was already up and running. Unfortunately it wasn’t running well. Despite having a very powerful server (a load balancer and two Linux servers each with four 4-core XEON processors), the site regularly went down.

Shawn asked us if we could help him rewrite the code that was serving his directory, but after our initial consultation we realized that rewriting the code would only solve part of his problem. His server had plenty of power, but it was not configured properly. We also discovered that he was planning to add an advertising affiliate program, for which a payment gateway would be needed.

We agreed that the most efficient option was to rewrite the code from scratch and to set up and configure a new server for him using SSL to accommodate the new payment gateway. Then we went to work.

First we wrote a prototype code and thoroughly tested it to make sure it would perform efficiently. Once we were satisfied with its performance, we implemented the changes, significantly altering the database and integrating the payment gateway in the process.

Next we began work on the server. We recommended that Shawn replace his server with a single two processor 4-core XEON server, and we configured it for maximum performance, security and reliability.

Within about four months, the new site was up and running. Thanks to the new code and server configuration (and despite having reduced the number of cores from 32 to 8) the CPU’s load has never peaked beyond 10%. We are pleased to report that even though traffic has increased six-fold since the launch of the new site, the server has never gone down.
